I’d Rather Eat Nails than Set Business Goals!
Ever wondered why some of your members are achieving so much more with
their businesses than others? Could it be luck? Being in the right place
at the right time? Or, could it be the result of the three building blocks
– better direction, planning and focus. All the things that any contractor
can learn! They can get what they want if they are willing to do the things
it takes to be successful.
Sound too good to be true? Well, it’s not!
Direction, planning, and focus are not complicated, but they must be
learned and managed. As the leading speaker to contractors all over this
country, I find it amazing how much benefit contractors get by learning
how to make a few simple changes.
Setting and achieving goals will always change life’s for the better.
If contractors fail at setting goals, it is a result of attempting something
they haven’t been properly trained to do. Setting goals is a one of the
greatest frustrations that many contractors face in their professional
career. That is a result of our “limiting beliefs” that we will never achieve
the goals we have set. It doesn’t have to be this way.
Through a straightforward systematic approach in both my presentations
“How to Build BIGGER Profits in Your Construction Business” and “How to
be a Great Goal Achiever” I emphasize the key elements in developing and
identifying worthy personal and business goals. Once contractors have learned
what makes it work they are better equipped to successfully carry out their
goals.
Here are some Keys to Successful Goal Setting and Achievement
-
Self-assessment: Where are we now? Before we can determine where
we want to go, we must first figure out where we are. This step identifies
strengths and weaknesses, and unique attributes. These individual traits
form the foundation for identifying opportunities and challenges.
-
Identifying the right goals: Why do most goals fail? Because the
wrong ones are set to begin with. Yogi Berra said it best of all, “You
got to be careful if you don’t know where you’re going, because you might
not get there.” Identifying the goals is worth investing the time and effort.
My presentation “How to be a Great Goal Achiever” I teach the famous “Stick
Person” principle on how the mind really works and what you need to do
to focus it on your goals. This approach eliminates “limiting beliefs”
and allows the person to set attainable goals.
-
Developing a plan: Would you take a trip without a road map?
I certainly hope you wouldn’t. Setting a goal also means developing a plan.
A step-by-step process of setting realistic objectives, achievable benchmarks,
and a workable time-line. In my presentation “How to Build BIGGER Profits
in Your Construction Business”, I provide the attendees with the intricate
formulas, techniques and steps they need to develop a solid goal based
on the capabilities of their business.
-
Motivation: We all need it on a daily basis, but how do we administer
it to ourselves? By utilizing our powers of visualization. This process
is of finding our internal motivational forces are outlined in detail in
“How to be a Great Goal Achiever”. Once the person has learned how to utilize
their internal and external forces they can keep themselves motivated on
a daily basis.
-
ACTION: Setting your plan into motion is an absolute must! Without
action your plan is nothing more than a work of fiction. Achieving ongoing
results takes a strategy. Identifying your major drivers and inhibitors
and what it takes to achieve them. Well-planned strategies will keep you
in forward movement.
-
Accountability: Just like a plane in flight, constant external forces
are always trying to move it off course. Your goal setting must have a
system of checks and balances. This allows to the goal setter to assess
how well they are doing and to determine what adjustments are needed. Just
like the plane in flight, once it realizes that it is off course and how
much, it can make the necessary adjustments. Goal setting requires the
same ability.
-
Persistence: Never giving up is an essential ingredient. You must
keep at it no matter what. Setting and achieving worthwhile goals is essential
to achieving our full potential. Goal setting is a long term never ending
plan. Learning to persist is critical. Napoleon said it best when asked
why he won so many of his battles. He said “ I am focused on my objective,
therefor my obstacles must give way”.
Goal Achievers overcome obstacles!
