Maybe It’s Not Pareto’s Fault!

Blame Pareto! He did it to us. Why not, it’s easier than blaming ourselves.

This famed Italian economist and sociologist, (1848-1923), just plain knew too much. Since he developed the famous Pareto Principle, he’s messed us all up. You know the one.

It’s now known as the 80-20 rule. You know 80% of all the profitable jobs go to 20% of all the contractors. Or, 80% of all your problems are caused by 20% of your people. Etceteras.

The problem is he’ right!

It’s also safe to say that 80%, probably more, of the contractors in this country take the low road for life. They stay firmly planted in their comfort zone of mire and mediocrity. And 20%, probably fewer, make it into the pantheon of high achievers.

From where I stand you have 3 choices.

1.You can settle for a life of mire and mediocrity. (Not recommended.)

2.You can create a plain, ordinary life for yourself and your family. (OK but no cigar!)

3.You can be the conscious creator of a future glowing with challenges, growth, fulfillment and success (Now this sounds interesting.)

Managing Our Evolution

As business owners we have many marvelous opportunities to make a real difference in this world. We can certainly become a major player in key “social roles”, “family values” and “thinking globally while acting locally”. In truth, it’s the “Vision and Mission thing.” May sound corny, but it’s true. The big concepts keep most of us going, not the minutia.

Have you developed your “Vision and Mission” for yourself, your business, your employees and most importantly, your family? Truth is, most contractors today go to work each day and let their businesses’ take them wherever it wants to. Instead of the opposite. At the end of their day, all worn out and just plum tuckered, they go home to their families. Does this sound right?

What do we need to do?

For starter’s, let's step out of our box for just one minute. Would your personal life, business life and your family life be greatly improved if you could gain control of where everything is heading? I absolutely guarantee it will if you become a creator of value and a visionary.

As this country’s leading business development consultant to contractors, I constantly get to see the same results in many contractors all over. Whenever a contractor is depressed or frustrated with the business, their employees and family, it’s because they haven’t developed a strong Vision or Mission Statement. This happens because they either don’t have one or possess a weak one. They tend to get lost in the midst of all the expensive day-to-day activities. It even gets worse when their employees and family can’t buy into the “Statement”. Now they’re getting beaten up from all sides!

Some of the greatest achievements of mankind have been accomplished because of a strong vision and mission. One that everyone can buy into, be part of and be proud of. If such a simple technique can work miracles and improve our lives, why are so many of us not using them? That’s simple. Because we don’t know how.
